The Vogelsberg is the largest volcanic area in the middle of Europe, one of the greatest expanse of ground in Hesse and the "Natural Park Upper Vogelsberg" is the first in Hesse and the oldest of its kind in Germany.

It consists of the following local authority districts: Freiensteinau, Grebenhain, Herbstein, Lautertal, Schotten und Ulrichstein im Vogelsbergkreis, Laubach im Landkreis Gießen, Gedern, Hirzenhain und Nidda im Wetteraukreis. The municipality Birstein from the Main-Kinzig-Kreis was incorporated with the Nature Park in 2004. The centre of it is the Oberwald, a mainly unsettled area.
