All ponds and lakes in the Vogelsberg have been fashioned by the hand of man: in former times for breeding fish, for mills and ice ponds or for storing wood. The oldest ponds and lakes are about 500 years old, whereas the dams and artificial lakes are not much older than a few decades.

The Nidda Dam in the south of Schotten is a reservoir to prevent the area from flooding. Its additional use for sailing, bathing, surfing, camping and fishing is a welcome by product. The pond Obermoos (Obermooser Teich) has been used for breeding carps for hundreds of years. When the brood of the carps were big enough they were sent to the Lake Niedermoos (Niedermosser See) via connecting ditch to grow until they could be sold.

The 'Obermooser Teich' is at present a National Parik like e.g. The 'Reichloser See' and the 'Rothenbachteich'. The 'Niedermooser See' as well as the 'Gederner See' invite people for bathing, sailing, surfing, fishing and camping.

The former privilege of the ruling families to put ponds has changed in the last centuries. Many people who owned in the last centuries an estate fulfilled their long cherished wish of a pond or only a small puddle. So the number of ponds in the Vogelsberg went up so much, that they are uncountable at present. Smaller ponds in the near of places of residence e.g. are often accepted by the people as “islands for rest”.
